A Note About Our License and Minors

Bock is Licensed as a Bar

Even though Bock serves food, our license is not a restaurant license. We are licensed as a Type 42 – On‑Sale Beer and Wine Public Premises bar by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). Licenses run with the location and do not automatically change when a new business takes over or when a kitchen is added. Our license is the same one that has been in place at this address since 1986, and it remains in effect today.

What the Law Says

A Type 42 license allows the sale of beer and wine for consumption on the premises but does not allow minors. California Business and Professions Code Section 25665 makes it a misdemeanor:

  • For a bar to allow anyone under 21 to enter or remain inside.

  • For a person under 21 to enter or remain inside a bar.

There are no exceptions. Children and infants are considered under 21 in the eyes of the state.

What That Means for Bock

Because we are licensed as a bar, no one under 21 may enter Bock at any time. Allowing minors inside would put both our guests and our business in violation of state law and could result in the loss of our license.

This rule is black and white under California law and is not up for debate. Please do not argue with our staff about this. They are legally required to enforce the law and are simply doing their job to keep Bock in compliance.

Thank You

We understand this may be confusing, especially since we serve food. We appreciate your understanding and compliance with California law.
